The Story at a Glance: Meryn Cooper has never dreamed of being one of the Bonded, the King’s elite warriors who form mental links with massive, vicious direwolves. She’s made peace with her life scraping by in poverty in the shadows of the castle. But then her younger sister Saela is kidnapped, stolen across the border by the immortal monsters her country has spent centuries fighting. And Meryn’s world falls apart. Desperate to cross the front and save her sister, Meryn enlists in the army—only to discover that there are Bonding Trials this year, where all soldiers are forced to risk their lives in an attempt to connect with a direwolf. It’s too late to turn back; Meryn is thrown into the deadly competition against her will.

Rating:
This was a really enjoyable read and a solid 5 stars for me. The writing flows smoothly from the start, and the story kept my attention without ever feeling too obvious or overdone. I especially liked the bond between humans and wolves, it felt fresh and well thought out.
The world-building struck a nice balance between being detailed and still leaving room for imagination. The plot surprised me more than once. Just when I thought I had things figured out, it took a turn I didn’t see coming. The final twists were especially great and left me excited to read the next book.
One thing I really appreciated was how the story develops the friendships between the characters. They feel genuine and grow naturally over time, adding a lot of heart to the book. There’s a solid mix of trust-building, conflict, and quiet moments that made the group dynamics feel believable.

And while the love story has a familiar setup, it never feels dull. It kept me guessing in a good way, with enough tension and small surprises to make it satisfying without being overly dramatic.
If you like fantasy with emotional depth, strong friendships, a bit of romance, and some unexpected turns along the way, Direbound is definitely worth picking up.
