The Story at a Glance:
Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.
Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.
The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou’s most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.
And love makes fools of us all.
My thoughts…
★★★☆☆
I really enjoyed the beginning of this book. It pulled me in right away, and I loved getting to know Lou and her story. The magic system was interesting, and I’m always a fan of a good witch story. The forced proximity trope is also one of my favorites, so this book definitely had a lot going for it.
That said, somewhere along the way I found myself less invested in the story. I can’t quite put my finger on why. There was plenty happening and the story remained exciting. I just didn’t feel as emotionally engaged as I expected to.
I did enjoy the twist near the end, which caught me by surprise and left me curious about what comes next. While this wasn’t a standout read for me, I’m still planning to continue with book two to see where the story goes.
