Review of The Lonely Hearts Book Club

Get to Know the Book

Title: The Lonely Hearts Book Club
Author: Lucy Gilmore
Published: 2023

The Story at a Glance:
Sloan Parker works at the local library, is engaged to a dependable fiancé, and definitely isn’t lonely—or so she tells herself. Still, she can’t deny that one of the highlights of her week is trading witty barbs with Arthur McLachlan, the library’s grumpiest regular.

When Arthur suddenly stops showing up, Sloan finds herself unexpectedly worried. Worried enough to go looking for him. The decision gets her fired, but it also leads her to Arthur’s doorstep—and to an unlikely group of strangers: Arthur himself, his eccentric neighbor, and a mysterious man who seems to spend an awful lot of time sitting in a car outside Arthur’s house.

Before she knows it, Sloan has helped create a book club made up of people who have no business becoming friends. As the meetings pile up, so do the secrets, unexpected connections, and reasons to keep coming back. Because sometimes the people who change your life are the ones you’d never choose for your book club.

My thoughts…

★★★★★

I absolutely loved this book. It was exactly what I needed after finishing the Lady of Darkness series.. I was deep in my book hangover, and this story turned out to be the perfect cure.

The writing style was a bit different from what I normally read, which was actually refreshing. It felt quieter and more character-focused, and I found myself completely invested in these wonderfully imperfect people and the relationships that formed between them.

What I loved most was the way the story explored friendship, loneliness, and finding connection in unexpected places. It’s such a beautiful, cozy, heartwarming read. But don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s all light and fluffy. There were several emotional moments that really hit me, and I actually cried at one point.

If you’re looking for a story about unlikely friendships, found family, community, and the people who make life a little brighter, I highly recommend picking this one up.

Disclaimer: These are just my personal thoughts — totally okay if you feel differently! I’m a mood reader, so timing and vibes definitely affect how much I enjoy a book. I read for entertainment, not to analyze every line like a literature professor. So take this as a casual opinion from one booklover to another. ❤️
