Book review of The Modern Girls Guide to Magic

By Eli on June 17, 2025June 17, 2025

If you’re anything like me, sometimes you just need a light, cozy read to escape into, something with magic, charm, and minimal drama. That’s exactly what A Modern Girl’s Guide to Magic promises.

But did it live up to the magic? Here’s my review of The Modern Girls Guide to Magic.

Get to Know the Book

Title: The Modern Girl’s Guide to Magic
Author: Linsey Hall
Published: 2023
The Story at a Glance: In A Modern Girl’s Guide to Magic, a young witch trying to navigate life, love, and magical mishaps in the modern world finds herself caught between ancient magical traditions and her own desire for a fresh start. With a hint of romance, a dash of humor, and plenty of cozy charm, it’s a feel-good story about finding your power — both magical and personal.

My thoughts…

Rating:

This one started off strong. I really liked the main character and her voice right from the beginning. The setting was charming, the vibes were cozy, and it had all the ingredients for a perfect light read. I’m always here for modern witches and a touch of everyday magic, and this definitely delivered on that front.

That said, while the book was cute and easy to get into, it was also very predictable. I kept waiting for a twist, a surprise, or at least a real challenge for the characters to overcome, but things stayed pretty smooth all the way through. There wasn’t much tension or drama, which made it feel a bit too safe for me. I wanted to care more about what would happen next, but the stakes just never felt very high.

Still, this is a perfect cozy comfort read if you’re in the mood for something light and low-stress. It’s sweet, it’s magical, and it’s ideal for those days when you just want to curl up with a book that feels like a warm hug, without emotional turmoil.

So while it wasn’t a standout for me personally, I’d still recommend it to readers looking for an easy, feel-good escape.

Disclaimer: These are just my personal thoughts – totally okay if you feel differently! I’m a mood reader, so timing and vibes definitely affect how much I enjoy a book. I read for entertainment, not to analyze every line like a literature professor. So take this as a casual opinion from one booklover to another. ❤️
