Title: Dance of ThievesAuthor: Mary E. Pearson
Published: 2018
The Story at a Glance: When the patriarch of the Ballenger empire dies, his son, Jase, becomes its new leader. Even nearby kingdoms bow to the strength of this outlaw family, who have always governed by their own rules. But a new era looms on the horizon, set in motion by a young queen, which makes her the target of the dynasty’s resentment and anger. At the same time, Kazi, a legendary former street thief, is sent by the queen to investigate transgressions against the new settlements. When Kazi arrives in the forbidding land of the Ballengers, she learns that there is more to Jase than she thought. As unexpected events spiral out of their control, bringing them intimately together, they continue to play a cat and mouse game of false moves and motives in order to fulfill their own secret missions.

Rating:
For the first 50 or so pages I wasn’t sure if this book was right for my current reading mood. But then it suddenly picked up, and from that point on I had a hard time putting it down.
The characters felt relatable, and the worldbuilding was rich and immersive. I especially loved the variety of characters and how distinct each of them felt. The relationships, both romantic and otherwise, were layered and compelling, adding depth and tension to the plot. The story also took some twists I didn’t see coming, which kept me hooked.
And that ending? Let’s just say I’m glad I already had the next book waiting on my shelf, because I needed to dive straight in.
If you’re looking for an exciting heist/thieves story with great characters and a great (closed-door) romance, this is absolutely worth picking up. Even though I was skeptical through the first chapters it ended up being exactly what I was in the mood for.
