Title:
Emily Wilde’s encyclopaedia of faeries
Author:
Heather Fawcett
Published: 2023
The Story at a Glance:
Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world’s first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party, or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people.
So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, get in the middle of Emily’s research, and utterly confound and frustrate her.
My thoughts…
★★★★☆
This book was such a delightful surprise. It was cozy, funny, and adventurous all at the same time, making it a joy to read from start to finish.
It wasn’t quite what I expected before I picked it up, but in a good way. I loved the blend of folklore, academia, and fantasy, and the story had a charm that kept me turning the pages.
I’m usually not a fan of books written in a journal or diary format, but it worked incredibly well here. It felt natural, added a lot of personality to Emily’s character, and made the world feel even more immersive.
If you’re looking for a cozy fantasy with faeries, humor, and a touch of adventure, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a go.
